Man jailed for stealing Facebook friend’s handbag

A RE-KINDLED friendship didn't last long, after Bo James Allen took off with his old school mate's handbag.

The 19-year-old met with a woman outside of her boyfriend's Rockhampton house on May 13 last year.

Last week Allen pleaded guilty in the Rockhampton District Court to charges of robbery.

Crown prosecutor Sandra Cupina told the court Allen and the woman attended Mount Morgan primary school together.

She said they hadn't interacted for many years, until they became Facebook friends.

The court heard the pair were sending Facebook messages to each other on the night in question

Ms Cupina said the defendant went to the woman's boyfriend's house, where she was staying.

Allen then snatched the woman's mobile phone out of her hands and ran off "as a prank".

The court heard the woman followed him and they ended up in the grounds of the Mount Archer school, where some sexual interaction occurred.

As they were leaving, the woman's handbag strap broke on a fence, so Allen grabbed it and fled.

Ms Cupina said police later found the handbag thrown down into a drain.

She said the phone was with a friend of the defendant.

Defence barrister Ross LoMonaco said Allen had "gone off the rails" since the death of his mother when he was 17.

Mr LoMonaco said the time his client had spent in custody had been "sobering" and he was keen to get out and lead a life free of crime.

Allen was sentenced to 294 days in jail, which he had already served.

He was released on parole.
