Young gun to pack a punch at international comp

Gympie 10-year-old Xavier Gomes is a polite young man who is also one of the best practitioners of karate for his age in Australia.

The Cooloola Christian College Year 5 student goes overseas this month to represent his country as the reigning national champion at the International Sports Karate Association Championships.

He will travel to Europe after a successful campaign at the Gold Coast recently where he placed in seven different events.

Gomes trains at Rimmington Martial Arts, which took a small contingent of competitors to the glitter strip and the young gun was not the only one who had success.

Alvey Pinchin placed fourth in his first-ever sparring event while Liam Mitchell was able to get across the line in first place in a continuous contact sparring event winning by technical knock-out.

Keegan Prass was also awarded first and third in his sparring divisions.

However, it was Gomes who shone.

"I have been doing it (karate) since I was four," Gomes said.

"I am excited. The best part about it is that I get to compete on the international stage and I get to verse other people from around the world."

The brown belt is the Australian traditional forms champion but, according to coach Trevor Rimmington, is also rated number one in the country at sparring, kata and weapons.

Gomes will up against the world's best when he leaves in less than two weeks.

" I have been training six out of seven days a week, for about 1-2 hours," Gomes said.

Gomes' training regime will ensure nothing is left to chance in the German competition.
