Young gun joins ACA Masters

GYMPIE junior cricketer Slatter Mitchell received the call-up of a lifetime on Sunday when he was asked to play for the ACA Masters team against the Gympie All Stars in a Twenty20 match.

Slatter, who plays for Gympie A-grade team Valleys and various representative teams, showed composure beyond his years running on to Albert Park alongside his cricket idols.

Any signs of tenseness weren’t apparent as Mitchell fielded with the ACA Masters.

After initially expecting to be one of hundreds cramming the stands, the opportunity to actually be a part of the action was not one to be missed.

The Gympie crowd showed its appreciation of his efforts with plenty of applause as he covered the ground with speed and skill, cutting off a number of shots destined for the boundary.

Slatter gave everything he had during the ACA Masters’ time in the field, even crashing into the field rope at one point in an all-or-nothing effort to cut off the ball.

For a young cricketer who has not only played with adults in Gympie A-grade competition but also various Wide Bay and local representative sides, the experience of fielding alongside an outstanding list of Australian cricket legends is one not soon to be forgotten.
