ORIGINAL STORY: A young farming couple from Murgon claimed Grand Champion Prime Exhibit following the prime cattle judging at yesterday's Gympie Show.

Mitch Upton was supported by partner Megan during the judging and both were overjoyed when their Limousin heifer, aged 20 months, was judged best on show.

Judging the cattle was the expert eye of Terry Nolan.

Mr Nolan said the limousin heifer was selected best from a quality 140 head of cattle.

"The standard is very high today," he said.

"We have 140 head so that is up a bit on last year and the quality is exceptional."

Mr Nolan said a lot of farmers chose to save themselves especially for the Gympie Show.

"The Gympie Show is seen as high quality so a lot of farmers save funds to travel here and take part," he said.

Following the announcement of the Grand Champion Prime Exhibit, spectators braved the showers to witness the fast paced auction of the winning beast, weighing a hefty 526kg.

The auction was won by Nolan Meats, fetching a price of $2.50 a kilogram and Mr Upton was pleased with the outcome.

"Fantastic," he said. "This is a good price and I'm very happy. It's been a great day."

Mr Nolan said the sale price of $2.50 was above the going market price.

"The market fluctuates a lot but around $1.80 would be the going price," he said.

Mr Upton has farming in his blood, having grown up on the land in Murgon with his family. He met his partner Megan, from Mackay, at a football match.

"I love the farming lifestyle," Mr Upton said.

The farming couple was an interesting rarity at the Gympie Show yesterday with most cattle exhibitors coming from older generations.
