Young aces to battle it out
JUNIOR tennis steps into the spotlight this weekend as the Reg English Tennis Centre hosts the fourth round of the Sunshine Coast Junior Masters Circuit.
The Gympie Junior Masters tournament is being directed by Gympie and District Tennis coach Matthew Watkins and a number of locals will be hitting their home courts.
Gympie players in action include Jordi Millard, Sophie Wright, Christy Scott and Travis Dahlheimer in addition to the Cross brothers of Michael, Nathan and Andrew.
As the fourth instalment of the Sunshine Coast Junior Masters Circuit, the tournament will involve 80 players in total.
There are seven stops on the circuit with players able to accumulate points along the way in the hope of taking out their respective age groups.
Gympie has a history of performing well on the circuit, with brother and sister duo Thomas and Emily Arnell to have featured prominently in the past.
Sunshine Coast development co-ordinator Donna Timm said she was looking forward to the event as registrations were finalised earlier this week.
“There is a lot of junior talent rising through the ranks and events like these are great way to see it,” she said.
Tennis action takes place today and tomorrow at the Reg English Tennis Centre with finals schedule for tomorrow afternoon. See The Gympie Times next week for more on the junior tournament.
