Yeppoon’s Mater Hospital closing after 17 years of operation

YEPPOON'S Mater Hospital will close its doors in August after 17 years of operation.

Mercy Health CEO Ian Mills told Win News that hospital admissions were dramatically down and the 18-bed facility was no longer financially viable.

He said the opening of Yeppoon Hospital in 2010 and the close proximity of Rockhampton Hospital were contributing factors.

A private meeting was held yesterday with doctors and nurses where they were told of the decision.

Five of the doctors have worked at the hospital since it opened in 1998.

Mr Mills said they would help the 35 staff to find employment in other CQ hospitals where there were a number of vacancies.

CQ Medical Imaging, specialists and the medical centre will continue to operate out of the hospital.
