Year 7 pilot program extended before 2015 roll-out
MORE than 2300 Year 7 students in Queensland will head to high school this year as part of an expansion of a state-wide pilot program in 19 state high schools.
The pilot program started last year, with Year 7 students undertaking their studies at Murrumba State Secondary School instead of local primary schools.
Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said the program would be extended to another 18 schools this year, in anticipation of the state-wide roll-out in 2015.
"Our newest pilot schools will draw on the experiences of Murrumba State Secondary College which, as a brand new school, became Queensland's first pilot school last year with Year 7 students only," he said.
"We look forward to more insights and lessons from the second year of the pilot program, which will involve Year 7 students joining older students in a high school setting."
The controversial move was started by the previous Labor government, and Mr Langbroek said it would continue, with junior secondary to be eventually added to every high school in Queensland.
"There will continue to be a major focus on making the transition to high school as easy as possible for Year 7 students," he said.
"There will also be 59 primary school teachers making the move across to teach Year 7 in our pilot high schools."
Mr Langbroek said the Newman Government was investing $328 million over three years to ensure that all Queensland schools had the infrastructure in place to accommodate Year 7 students from 2015.
"Many of the pilot schools have undergone significant upgrades and refurbishments to accommodate Year 7 students, while Pimpama and Mackay Northern Beaches are brand new schools," he said.
"More infrastructure will be rolled out in Queensland schools over the next two years, in preparation for the state-wide move of Year 7 into high school in 2015."
