WARREN Struthers and his wife Tracey had been making the annual trip to the Bathurst 1000 when they missed the turn that would take them to the New England Hwy.

Having pulled his blue Ford Falcon ute and camper trailer over to the side of the Gore Hwy just west of Westbrook at about 11pm Tuesday, Mr Struthers attempted to make a u-turn to get back on track.

Tragically, he crossed into the path of an oncoming B-double truck loaded with flour from a nearby grain mill.

Mr Struthers was critically injured in the horrific smash, and after being cut from the wreckage and transported to hospital, he died.

The crash also injured Mrs Struthers who this week was in hospital for injuries including a broken arm.

The couple were from Bray Park, a suburb north of Brisbane.

A close family friend described Mr Struthers as a caring man and a loyal friend that would do anything to help out a mate.

"(He) was always fixing other people's cars and doing odd jobs without asking for money or anything in return," the friend said.

"Warren and his wife Tracey were on there (sic) way to the Bathurst V8 Supercars for the week as it's the only holiday they take every year when the accident occurred."

Mr Struthers leaves behind his wife, two children and two grandchildren.

An online fundraiser has been established to help support the family.
