Womens hockey back with bang

AFTER two years of a highly successful Gympie women’s hockey competition, organiser Amanda Millard is about to lift the curtain on an action-packed 2010 season.

The competition will run each Friday night and Gympie Hockey publicity officer Desli Adams is excited about the third year of the popular competition.

“This competition enables the young girls finishing in the juniors to continue playing the game, while also providing a local social competition for all the senior women,” she said.

The competition plays an important role in allowing Gympie Hockey to fulfil its objective of developing women in the game and providing opportunities for advancement in the fast-pace sport.

Millard, acknowledged for her contributions to the game in Gympie by being crowned 2008 Sports Administrator of the Year by the Gympie and District Sportsmen’s Association, has been a tireless volunteer behind the scenes.

The women’s competition has also allowed Gympie women to assert themselves as a hockey powerhouse in the region again after many years of missing in action.

“In 2009 Gympie fielded a veterans women’s hockey team in the State Championships,” Adams said.

“The girls had a great championships and placed second in their division after being narrowly beaten in drop-offs.”

This year, players will again have an opportunity to be part of the Gympie side in June.

A trial hit around today at 6.30pm will finalise teams while the first round is due to start on March 19 at 6.30pm.
