Woman drowns trying to rescue child washed from rocks

A WOMAN has died after trying to help a young boy who was swept off rocks into the water at Fingal Head.

A 26-year-old woman entered the water to assist a 9-year-old boy who was swept from rocks into the sea near the Fingal Head Lighthouse, just before 5pm.

The woman also experienced difficulty after assisting the boy for several minutes, Tweed Police said.

Two male bystanders entered the water and swam to help the woman and boy.

A police officer from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command also entered the water and swam about 100 metres to assist the boy back to the beach.

The two civilian rescuers remained with the woman who had lost consciousness until the arrival of a Surf Life Saving boat.

She was then returned to the beach, where police and Ambulance Paramedics commenced CPR.

The woman was conveyed to The Tweed Hospital, where she later died.

The young boy, who was not injured, was conveyed to the hospital for examination.

The boy and the woman are not related.

Investigations are continuing and a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
