Witnesses comforted child after Dreamworld deaths

WITNESSES have told of comforting a child they believe was related to one of the four people who died on the Thunder River Rapids Ride at Dreamworld this afternoon.

Claire Wooley and Lia Capes were waiting in line to go on the ride, just after 2pm today, when people started running out screaming.

"Before we knew it everyone was running out in hysterics," Ms Capes told ARM this evening.

Ms Wooley said in the moments after the tragedy happened she was: "Just assisting a child..we believe her mother was one of the deceased."

Dreamworld has taken to Twitter this evening to say the park will be closed until further notice is given.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has also spoken to the media about the tragedy during a visit to Mackay this afternoon.

"First and foremost can I on behalf of Queensland convey our thoughts and prayers to the two males and two females who are no longer with us," she said.

"This has been an absolute tragedy, a tragic accident at Dreamworld where many thousands of people go on a daily basis to enjoy the day with their family and friends."

The Premier went on to say the scene had been described to her as horrific and a thorough investigation could well run into the night.
