Fresh Winx keeps Waller on his toes

IT'S been four years since Winx's last loss, but trainer Chris Waller still gets nervous - even before an exhibition gallop.

"You get the Winx jitters, you get the butterflies and you get a bit edgy,'' Waller said after Winx completed a solo exhibition gallop between races at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

"You get a bit edgy and start walking on the spot, then it's a relief when it's done. I'm sure it's the same for her.''

Champion mare Winx worked over 1000m under jockey Kerrin McEvoy and was timed to run the trip in 66.08sec with her final 600m in 36.98sec.

As always, Winx attracts a crowd, with most on-track on Saturday watching the great mare go through her paces.

As McEvoy brought her back into the mounting yard after the gallop she was greeted by polite applause from fans.

Winx will have her penultimate race in the Group 1 $1 million George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens next Saturday.

The mighty mare, who is on a phenomenal 31-race winning streak, will attempt to win her fourth successive George Ryder.

Ladbrokes already has Winx at $1.10 favourite to win again next Saturday.

"She's very fresh and she's just thriving," Waller said.

"We've always done it when she's had three weeks between runs, we bring her here today for an exhibition gallop. It just seems to fit in well, it brings her back down to earth.

"Änd that's Winx, she's just ready to explode. It makes my job a lot easier."

McEvoy, who was deputising for regular rider Hugh Bowman, said Winx "gave me a great feel".

"She zipped around there in good style, her action felt great, and she skipped across the wet track,'' McEvoy said.

Winx is due to have her farewell race in the Group 1 $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on April 13.
