Winston House closure putting stress on local families

WINSTON House residents risk losing contact with their families if it closes and they have to live outside town.

Cooloola Cove's Julie Green said yesterday it was "a real shame" that Winston House was closing down.

"My stepfather has been in Winston House for two years this February," she said.

"He is 93. He calls it home and often comments on the wonderful staff and how he loves his little room there.

"Sadly, my mum passed away in that same room last September and he feels closer to her living there.

"He is so settled - it will be awful for him to leave.

"I know he will find it hard to settle into a new environment at his age.

"I am 40 to 45 minutes away and I can only visit him fortnightly as it is. If he moved to another town it would be harder to visit.

"I believe all the nursing homes in Gympie are full, with no immediate vacancies. I was told to look at Maryborough, Hervey Bay and Sunshine Coast but this takes our loved ones further away."
