Why taking a dip in the ocean could make you feel warm

FEELING cold at night? Maybe you should take an ocean dip to warm up?

While temperatures have been dropping to single digits on land, the temperatures in the ocean have remained constantly warm.

The sea temperatures at Coolum Beach were listed at 24 degrees this week, while Noosa was slightly warmer at 25 degrees.

The Sunshine Coast has its first brush with a winter chill when outside temperatures plummeted in the hinterland to single digits on April 11.

And while it has warmed up since then, with the minimum temperature for most of this week for Maroochydore in the mid-teens, there is no doubt winter is far away.

A Sunshine Coast Surf Lifesaving spokesman said temperatures didn't vary much in the ocean in the region.

"The temperature varies about three to four degrees between winter and summer," the spokesman said.

"It is the wind chill factor that makes it feel colder."

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Sean Fitzgerald said the Sunshine Coast could expect a thunderstorm later in the week.

"We have a trough coming up which could bring a shower or two and even a storm on Wednesday," he said.

While storms were normally associated with summer, Mr Fitzgerald said they "can happen any time of the year".

The good news was the cyclone season was officially over.

The Bureau of Meteorology's website advises the cyclone season was from November to April.
