Beef Capital's best steak cooks uncovered

IF you've ever wondered who cooks the best steak, meat pie, or burger in the Beef Capital, the answer has finally been uncovered. The Tourism & Events Queensland Awards of Excellence honoured a number of eateries with the awards yesterday, with Beef Australia CEO Denis Cox presenting the trophies.

"Beef Australia's Awards of Excellence program plays an important role in raising an awareness of the health and economic benefits of eating our world class Australian product, as well as promoting the talent of local chefs, restaurant staff and business owners to the general public," he said.

The Great Western Hotel dominated the pubs and clubs classes, winning best steak, best beef signature dish, best low and slow beef dish and best beef pie or burger.

Central Park Motel - Rocky's Top Restaurant won best steak in the a la carte restaurant category. The restaurant also won the best beef pie or burger.

The competition for the Signature Dish Street Food attracted entries from across Australia, but was won by local Amanda Lawrence for her Sichuan Steamed Buns recipe.

She first discovered a complicated recipe for the dish years ago and started experimenting to develop a simpler method."I get really excited by new flavours and secondary cuts of meat," she said.

"I've been cooking beef cheeks in this method for quite a while, with Sichuan pepper and mushrooms… and thought this might be a nice opportunity."

Amanda's dish will be served at the showgrounds throughout Beef Australia 2015, with profits donated to the Cancer Council.

She will also get the chance to demonstrate the dish on stage at Beef Australia, alongside some of the best Australian and international chefs.

Beef Australia's consultant chef Shane Bailey helped judge the entries.
