Wet weekend to welcome winter
THE first day of winter could be a wet one for Gympie with rain and thunder expected to develop, hang around Saturday and intensify on Sunday.
It could be a good time to store some of your firewood in a dry place as the cloud cover will make our minimum temperatures a little more comfortable until about Wednesday, when minimums will drop and Gympie could possibly get its first frost of the season.
The region has had a wetter start to the year than 2011, with 872mm falling over 76 days in the last five months, compared to 855mm falling over 99 days in the same period last year.
After two consecutive years of La Niña, autumn proved the start of the drying out phase for south-east Queensland.
The region had a wet March and April before drying up in May.
Rainfall is also likely to be above average this winter.
Gympie has a 90% chance of receiving 10-20mm of rain on Sunday and a slight risk of frost by mid next week.
