GYMPIE cricket spectators were in awe of Wests' opening batsman Graeme Bembrick on Saturday as he opened fire at the One Mile Oval.

The weekend A-grade clash between Wests and Valleys was a game to be remembered for veteran Bembrick who, after winning the toss, smashed 93 runs from the opening innings.

Captain of Wests Brett Long said it was "fantastic" to see Graham in form and crack some hard-earned runs.

Long said the wicket was in a good condition due to games having been played the previous day.

Neil McKean and Josh Heck also had solid performances for Wests, scoring 35 and 27 respectively.

Valleys' bowlers tried to contain the ongoing bombardment from Wests' batsmen, with Glen Brady taking two wickets in an attempt to suppress Wests' key players.

However Wests' line-up batted strongly, even after being two men short, and captain Long not getting a chance at the crease because he had to work.

When Zach Gagan bowled Wests' final batsman Peter Bambling for seven, Wests were 6-216 and in a commanding position.

"Perhaps the team didn't need me," Long cheekily remarked.

Valleys' subsequent run chase started slowly.

Youngsters Zach Gagan and Brendan Westlake were sent out to try to accumulate quick runs.

The pair fell cheaply with Wests' Josh Heck taking two quick wickets.

At play's end, Valleys were floundering on just 21 runs with the loss of three wickets.

Karl Leupold was the top scorer, not out on eight.

Wests go into next weekend's play in the box seat.

Long said that the team would be going into this weekend's fixture with high spirits and confidence.

He said they hoped to finish a hard-fought season strongly.
