Wests' chances dashed by loss

ANY chance Wests had of making the Gympie Cricket Association’s Twenty20 competition grand final were dashed after a heavy nine-wicket loss to Valleys at the weekend.

Wests batted first and made a paltry 50 from 18 overs, before Valleys took to the middle and romped to the win.

With Colts’ guaranteed a final berth with one round of fixtures remaining, Valleys play Harlequins this weekend to decide the remaining spot.

The competition front-running Colts are already through courtesy of two successive victories.

Losing to Valleys was a painful experience for Wests.

Brendan Mahaffey started his team’s innings in reasonable style, making 26 not out. However, his commendable effort stood alone.

A host of single figures filled the remainder of Wests’ scoreboard, leaving the team languishing in deep water.

Valleys went on to pick up the bat and barely raise a sweat in the run chase, requiring just six overs to surpass Wests’ total.

Patrick Roser was in fine form for Valleys, making 29 before losing his wicket to a successful lbw appeal.
