Wenzel the top player

GYMPIE striker Drew Wenzel has been named Player of the Carnival at the under-19 Queensland Schoolboys hockey titles held in Gympie.

Wenzel was presented with the prestigious award at the closing ceremony on Sunday and named with fellow Gympie players Patrick Barnes and Joey Collins in the U19 Queensland side to tour New Zealand later in the year.

Wenzel starred for the third-placed Wide Bay side scoring seven goals in seven games for the home side.

The James Nash State High School student said he was surprised to win the award with so many other talented hockey players on show at the titles.

"It was a great feeling," Wenzel said.

"It is a fantastic way to finish my Wide Bay schoolboys' hockey career."
