Wait is over for fishing classic
THE countdown has stopped and the wait is over for the Mary Valley Family Fishing Classic which gets underway this evening at Borumba Dam.
While the competition officially starts tomorrow, event organiser Glenn Williams is confident the combination of food, free entertainment, prizes and fishing will be enough to satisfy even the most motivated angler.
The Lake Borumba Fish Stocking Association has worked tirelessly over the past months to ensure a solid and sustainable number of species are available for the competition.
Saratoga, bass, golden perch and catfish will be the stars, with Williams saying the dam is fishing well, particularly around the rock wall. There are already 60 confirmed entrants, but Williams is confident that number will double before the weekend is over.
With one of the warmest days so far this year predicted tomorrow, organisers expect the fish to be on the bite.
"Early reports are that reasonable fish are being pulled from the dam,” Williams said.
However, you do not have to catch the biggest fish to be eligible for a prize, with a mystery length competition providing plenty of opportunity for weekend warriors to get amongst the action.
"Anyone who weighs a fish in will go into the draw for the mystery length prize,” he said.
"So there is an incentive, you do not have to catch the biggest fish; it gives everyone a chance.”
It is not to late to nominate.
"In the past people have taken the kids on the Sunday, we will not knock them back.”
