Veterans to mark 50th anniversary

GYMPIE'S Vietnam Veterans are preparing to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first deployment of Australian troops to Vietnam.

The Gympie branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia is planning the usual march down Mary St through Memorial Lane, followed by a short service in Memorial Park.

This year's participants are asked to gather at 2.45pm in Smithfield St, for a 3pm step off.

Gympie VVAA president Len Herron said he encouraged veterans, their families, friends and the Gympie community to come along to the march and memorial service.

After the service, all Vietnam Veterans and their families are invited back to the Orchid Room at Gympie RSL Club for refreshments, where presentations of donations will be made to local welfare service groups, followed by a brief presentation on the Vietnam War.

The Gympie VVAA is about 45 members strong but is always looking for new members. Wives, children, grandchildren and siblings of Vietnam veterans can also join the association as full members.

As Vietnam Veterans Day approaches, Gympie VVAA will hold a street stall at the ANZ corner in Mary St, from 8am on August 9.
