Snake catcher deals with Middle Ridge python

VIDEO: Snakes still slithering in Toowoomba during winter

ALTHOUGH it's the middle of winter snakes are still on the move in Toowoomba.

Snake catcher David Wiedman has been busy rounding up snakes in the Garden City.

Yesterday he relocated a long yet skinny python from a Coolabah Cr home in Middle Ridge.

"In the middle of winter they are less active, but they will go out and get as much warmth as they can," Mr Wiedman said.

"They'll always be around the area. Whether you see them or not is a different story."

He said residents called snake catchers because they were concerned about pets and small children.

RELATED STORIES

The Rapt in Reptiles Presentations snake catcher advised residents not to approach snakes.

"The best thing to do is keep an eye on it and call a snake catcher," he said.

A common misconception is that snakes enter hibernation during winter.

They actually enter a similar state called brumation where they are less active but still go out to find as much warmth as they can.

What to do if you find a snake on your property

  • Keep everyone away from the area were the snake has been spotted
  • Keep any animals away from the area and hose your pets down with water to keep the snake away
  • Contact a snake catcher to discuss possible capture and removal of the snake
