GYMPIE Pines golfers Gavin Jensen, Kerry Gallagher and Greg Gallagher returned from Norfolk Island recently with much more than happy memories and a good supply of duty free liquor.
The trio was part of a group of seven Gympie Pines members who competed in the annual three-day Norfolk Island Veteran’s Carnival.
Standout performer in the group was Gavin Jensen who won the overall gross in the 55 years to 64 years age division.
Jensen’s scores included a first day total of 79, which he repeated on the second day and a final round of 77 to give him an overall gross of 235.
Had he been eligible, the Gympie Pines Club captain would have also won the 40 to 54 years age division.
Jensen’s final day score was even more impressive when taking into account the prevailing blustery conditions which made scoring incredibly difficult.
Playing partner Greg Gallagher said Jensen had the ideal game for the conditions with the wind so strong it would “blow a dog off its chain”.
“Gavin punches the ball long and low and this is exactly what’s needed when the wind is blowing a gale,” he said.
Jensen added another $200 to his booty by capturing the first and second day pro pins which were located on the treacherous par three fourth. This hole borders the ocean for its entire length. Kerry Gallagher was another Gympie player to shine in the tournament when she came third in the overall gross for the Ladies 55 years to 64 years age division.
Greg Gallagher couldn’t believe his luck when he won the draw for a return airfare to next year’s Norfolk Island Veteran’s Carnival.
“It has been a great week and I’m looking forward to coming back,” he said.
