Veteran golfer tees up A-grade victory
VETERAN Don Cappetti held off a spirited charge by fellow veteran Don Griggs to win last Tuesday's A-grade Single Stableford event at Gympie Pines.
Cappetti, who is regarded as one of the club's most consistent players, carded an excellent round of 39 points to relegate Griggs to runner-up on 37 points.
Griggs has been in top form winning first division honours just two weeks ago in another stableford event.
It was Cappetti's short game that proved to be the difference as demonstrated by his fine birdie on the 9th hole.
In B-grade it was another tight tussle between Brian "Butch" Carroll and Bryan Stallard who both had scores of 38 with Carroll finally winning on a countback.
For Stallard it was an overdue return to form after some months in the scoring wilderness.
Ken Williams was dominant in C-grade with a creditable 40 points which was four points clear of runner-up Jeff Mason with Alan Dougan coming in third on 35 points.
The day's other place getters were Tom Hand who came third in A-grade on a countback from Ian Seaniger while Peter Bayliss was third in B-grade on 37 points.
Two's: Don Cappetti, Lindsay B. Taylor, Joe Simaile.
Next Tuesday members will play a 4BBB Stableford event for trophies provided by Ian Seaniger and B.K. Watson.
In other golfing news, Greg Gallagher's run of sensational form continues.
The Gympie Vets member won both the nett and gross sections of the recent Hervey Bay Veterans Open Classic scoring a brilliant six over par 76 off the stick.
With three holes to play, Gallagher's round could have easily fallen to pieces.
"I was two over with three holes to play but had a triple after plugging my ball in the lip of the bunker," he said
"However I somehow managed to recover despite another bogey before completing my round." Gallagher has also recorded easy victories in his last three senior pennant matches his most recent being at Horton Park last Sunday where he won 5-4 against a 6 marker.
