Veteran drug raids lead brothers to court
THE scale of a major police anti-drug operation at Veteran led to complications yesterday in bail applications by two accused drug traffickers.
Allegations before the court involved cannabis and methamphetamine, allegedly uncovered in a major surveillance and detection operation by Gympie Criminal Investigation Branch officers.
That culminated in a raid on Friday and to the arrest of Clive Robert Deakin, 56 and his brother Michael John Deakin, 62.
Both men appeared in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Saturday morning and were remanded in custody to Gympie.
Each faces two counts of trafficking in dangerous drugs and Michael Deakin also faces four extra charges alleging he possessed property, including a motorcycle suspected of being used in a drug offence, and with possessing property obtained by offences.
The court was told of covert CCTV evidence and of a list of potential witnesses so extensive that police had not yet compiled it, making it impractical to impose no-contact conditions on bail.
Clive Deakin was granted bail but Michael Deakin was remanded in custody, both to appear again in Gympie on October 31.
