Veteran beaten but serves it up to opponent
Australia's highest ranked female player, 44-year-old Jian Fang Lay, has been knocked out of the singles tournament in Rio by the world No.13.
Competing at her fifth Olympics for Australia, world No.128 Lay went down fighting in straight sets to 26-year-old Singaporean Mengyu Yu 9-11 9-11 6-11 10-12.
In making the third round, Lay equalled Australia's best table tennis result at an Olympics, matching the 2012 London achievement of William Henzell.
"I have lost to her (Yu) two times before, including the last game in Glasgow (Commonwealth Games 2014)," said Lay, Australia's last hope in the women's singles. "She's very tough but I just tried."
Lay still has the team event to go, starting with a preliminary round on Friday night with Melissa Tapper and Sally Zhang.
