BASKETBALL: The Olympic dream is well and truly alive for Gympie man Steven Elliott.

Touted as one of the best para-athletes in the country, Elliott has helped guide the Australian under-23 wheelchair basketball team to a bronze medal at the world championships in Toronto, Canada.

Speaking with The Gympie Times, Elliott said the competition was like nothing he had experienced in the sport.

"The talent of some of the guys over there was crazy,” he said.

"The way they were moving the chair was unbelievable.”

Australia lost to powerhouse nation Turkey in the semi-finals, after beating Germany convincingly in the previous round.

Elliot said the experience had fuelled his Olympic dream.

"It definitely inspired me,” he said.

On the back of his recent performances, Elliott has been named as Gympie's latest Sunshine Coast Sports Federation development winner.

Gympie development winners are proudly supported by Gympie Regional Council and the Sunshine Coast Sports Federation.
