US girls tennis team takes Gympie courts
TENNIS: Gympie tennis players were joined by a team of American tennis players last night for Wednesday night fixtures at Reg English Memorial Tennis Centre to heat up the competition.
The group of 12 female tennis players from Indiana Wesleyan University had been invited to come and work with the Gympie Wesleyan Methodist Church from the start of July.
Pastor Gary McClintock said the tennis team was ranked as one of the top 15 college teams in America competing in tennis.
Coach Eddy Shigley said the team had come to share their faith through the sport of tennis.
Meanwhile here in town the girls had held Hot Shots programs at local schools with Tennis Gympie coach Matt Watkins.
The girls were at Cooloola Christian College yesterday and will be passing on their skills again today at Gympie South State School and Jones Hill Sate School.
Watkins said last night the girls would play in the fixtures for a fun night of tennis with a competition to be held today.
He said Gympie would front their own team to take on the American players tonight in both singles and doubles games.
"They are a great group of girls, very energetic and great with the kids," Watkins said.
"It is good for them to spread their message and get involved with the sporting community".
