US challenge for Opals

AUSTRAIA'S women basketball players knew they would have to beat the US to win gold in London. As it has turned out, the Opals will have to beat the US just to earn a place in the gold medal game.

After finishing second in their group, courtesy of a loss to France, the Opals were on course for a semi-final match-up against the Americans who topped the other group and smashed Canada 91-48 in the quarter-final.

Star forward Suzie Batkovic said the Aussies would need to defend well to win the match will will be played at 2am tomorrow (AEST).

"We've got to get stops," she said. "They're incredible athletes. For us, it's going to be about the defensive end, and getting good, easy looks on the offensive end."
