Upbeat plans for city heart
A "PLAZA" linking Memorial Park to Mary St, and a state-of-the-art transit centre near the Monkland St roundabout are two key recommendations of a draft master plan to go on public display next week.
Gympie Regional Council will today consider a package of urban design projects which are the culmination of an ongoing mission to improve the appeal of Gympie's inner city.
They include a Smithfield St concept design, Mary St design between Channon St and Monkland St, and a parking assessment.
The master plan for Nelson Reserve and Memorial Park also incorporates those parts of the inner city bound by Jaycee Way, River Rd and Monkland St.
It identifies a future youth precinct for the existing Memorial pool site (once the new aquatic centre is established), and a transit centre occupying the existing commercial properties bound by Jaycee way, River Rd and Monkland St.
The proposed Mary Street Plaza would be created between Memorial Park and Mary St and adjacent to Memorial Lane on flood-prone land occupied by Billy's Hotel and two other buildings, not including the Royal Hotel.
"This serves to extend the green spine into Mary St over land which is the most flood-prone in the town centre," the report says.
The council will hear today that the "package" was developed to allow the documents to go on public notification for business and land owners, and the community, to have their say before each is finalised.
