Under-13 Gympie Hockey boys champions
AN UNDER-13 boys team from Gympie Hockey travelled to the State Championships held in Maryborough and came home as undefeated champions.
The four-day carnival was held from June 28 with quite a successful turn for the Gympie boys on the final day as they came away winning division 2 and remained undefeated.
Both Riley Bambling and Matthew Browne were selected to play in the Queensland Cutters team later this year at the National Championships held in Darwin.
The U13 boys played Sunshine Coast in their first game, which resulted in one of their closer games, and the end result of 5-3.
Later that day the boys had a second game, this time against Tweed Heads and finished with the same result, 5-3.
The second day brought more goals and convincing wins for the boys as they went head to head with Fraser Coast 2, where they had a comfortable game and won 14-0.
That afternoon the team played Bundaberg winning 4-0.
On the third day the boys had only one game which they controlled until the last 20 seconds when Brisbane 2 scored off a penalty corner to end the game 3-1 resulting in a Gympie win.
The Gympie boys were against Brisbane 3 on the final day defeating their opponents 5-0, securing their undefeated status and winning their division.
Coach Darren Browne said he was very proud of the boys' effort and achievements and he believes that they represented Gympie extremely well.
At the presentation ceremony all the Gympie boys were given a medallion and presented with a shield.
During the ceremony Matthew Browne was also awarded best player of Division 2.
