A MUM-OF-SEVEN took her own life in her bedroom in the UK while her family sat downstairs celebrating a birthday, just weeks after finding out she was expecting another baby.

Carla Murtagh was found by her husband Matthew just nine days after she had booked an appointment to terminate her eighth child, The Sun reports.

An inquest into her death heard that as the pair already had seven children aged between 14 months and 15 years, Ms Murtagh had decided to abort the baby in August last year, but later changed her mind and decided to keep it.

On October 28, she was visited by midwife Donna Grey, who arranged an appointment for her to terminate the pregnancy at a Marie Stopes clinic in Birmingham.

The midwife told the hearing: "When I went to her home that day she was very upset.

"She wanted a termination. She was very unsure about her dates of the pregnancy.

"I spoke to Marie Stopes and they could offer her an appointment. After the consultation, she said, 'Thank you. You've given me what I've been asking for, for a long time."

When the medic saw the mum on November 4, just two days before she died, she found out Ms Murtagh had missed the appointment after having decided to keep the baby after all.

"She told me they'd had a family discussion and decided to keep the baby," Ms Grey added. "She seemed happy, and wanted to get an appointment for a scan."

On the day Ms Murtagh took her own life the family was celebrating a birthday, the inquest was told.

Mr Murtagh said that although his wife had woken up in a "bad mood" she otherwise seemed fine. But when he returned from going to the shops with two of their kids to buy a cake, she had gone upstairs and was "acting quiet".

He said: "She went upstairs and told me that she wanted to be left alone. I went downstairs to dish up the dinner and went up to get her."

After he found the 34-year-old, who had a history of depression, she was rushed to Heartland Hospital in Birmingham where medics attempted to save both mum and baby.

But Birmingham Coroner's Court heard that despite their best efforts, the 25-week-old baby was stillborn and Ms Murtagh was pronounced dead a short time after.

An investigation by the local clinical commissioning group also found no failures on the part of the GPs and midwives who provided treatment.

Coroner Louise Hunt recorded a verdict of suicide, saying the mum-of-seven's death was a "tragedy".
