Two issues to surrogacy: MP
SAYING he could not support the Queensland surrogacy for social reasons, LNP Member for Gympie David, Gibson MP, said he did however support altruistic surrogacy for medical grounds.
Last week the Queensland Parliament debated the controversial Surrogacy Bill 2009 with the final vote decriminalising altruistic surrogacy in Queensland.
“These are issues that are not decided along party lines but, rather, by an individual’s ethical, religious and moral values,” he said.
“This bill combined two separate but important issues – altruistic surrogacy for social choice and those who desire altruistic surrogacy for medical reasons. I could not support the bundling of those two issues together in some dishonest, all-or-nothing proposition.
“It was the equivalent of holding infertile couples to ransom for the benefit of another segment of our society.
“Altruistic surrogacy for social reasons concerns me deeply as I see this as the first step towards baby engineering, as couples can choose egg and sperm donors based on, say, the donor’s beauty, intelligence or even their sporting prowess.”
