Twins join boys in blue in Gympie

SENIOR constables Terry and Steve Buchanan are not your average policemen.

In fact, the 35-year-old identical twins are quite a novelty at the Gympie police station.

Born in Gympie, the brothers grew up in Imbil and completed their secondary education at Gympie High, both representing Wide Bay in their youth - one in rugby league and the other rugby union.

Both brothers loved their football from an early age, and were playing for the Gympie Brothers under-19s and U17s teams when Steve fractured his neck at Schoolies Week on the Sunshine Coast and wound up in a brace for three months.

His rugby league days were over, but Terry went on to play for Brothers A-grade and the Devils.

Terry completed his brick laying trade and worked as a brickie before joining the police force 10 years ago.

Steve did some farm work and was then employed at Nestle for seven years before he finally decided to also become a police officer.

Twins run in the family, with Terry and Steve's grandmother and her twin sister both living to be 98 and 95 respectively.
