LETTER: Truss blasted over Budget infrastructure 'disgrace'
LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
While Warren Truss is proudly acclaiming the LNP's infrastructure promises, the question must be asked: is this what the nation needs at this time?
Scientists are now saying that global warming is increasing at unexpected levels, yet the LNP is sailing along oblivious to the challenges facing all of us.
This month saw temperature records smashed, with our days up to eight degrees warmer.
What both major parties have been avoiding is a deep seated commitment to heavy rail.
It is a disgrace that from Beerwah north, Queensland has a single railway track.
This greatly reduces the rail passenger and freight capacity.
With road transport costing three times as much as rail, this imposes heavy costs on businesses along the route.
In other states like Victoria, where towns 100-200km from the city have fast efficient rails services, many professional city workers commute daily to their inexpensive country housing.
They are able to continue working on the train so that their overnight paperwork is done by the time that they arrive home, or to work the next day.
The towns where they live become revitalised with young families that add to the mix in the community, ensuring that schools and businesses stay viable.
The reduction in carbon made by switching to mass rail transport is immense, so it is a very responsible climate measure.
Sadly, our federal and state governments would prefer to give their private contractor mates jobs constructing roads, ensuring that we are totally unprepared for an oil-reduced future.
