Truck driver sprung with amphetamines in undies

A THAGOONA truck driver caught with amphetamines said he used the illegal drug to help him stay awake.

Nicholas Alan McLeod Owens was found in possession of the stimulant after police stopped him in his car.

After he was pulled over, Owens told the officers that he was driving to Dominos to pick up a pizza.

During the conversation, the police noted that Owens appeared nervous and was moving around as he adjusted his pants.

The officers became suspicious which led to a pat-down search.

Inside the 26-year-old's underwear they found two, small clip-seal bags with a white, crystal substance inside them.

Owens told the police the substance was amphetamines which he had bought for $300 about three weeks earlier.

He said he would place the drug underneath his tongue and used it to help him stay awake and alert.

At Ipswich Magistrates Court this week, Owens pleaded guilty to one count of possessing dangerous drugs.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Trent Voigt said Owens had also been found in possession of a knife when he was caught with the drugs on March 3.

Owens told police he used the knife for work and had just finished a shift.

Defence lawyer Alexis Oxley said Owens had a "limited" criminal history and had been co-operative with police.

Owens was convicted and fined $700.
