Triple treat for Wide Bay player

COMPETITION has been fierce at the Under 12 and 13 State Development Carnival at Gympie’s One Mile Ovals this week, but this didn’t detract from birthday celebrations yesterday for Wide Bay player Cory Leggett.

Leggett has been in Gympie contesting the week-long carnival in the Under 13 Wide Bay squad and celebrated turning 13 yesterday (in his number 13 jersey) with his team mates before taking to the field against North Queensland.

Leggett was shocked when the carnival announcer called him to the centre of Field 1.

The stunned and red-faced Wide Bay representative stood rooted to the ground as scores of well wishers sang happy birthday moments before his team began its game against North Queensland.

But a birthday win wasn’t to be for the birthday boy as his team fought bravely before losing by a single goal to Under 13 North Queensland 1-0.

The Queensland Carnival started last Sunday with an opening ceremony and the last day of competition is scheduled for tomorrow. Winning teams will be announced at the event’s conclusion.

The state competition encompasses the Under 12 Harry Linning, Under 12 Gino Paris and the Under 13 Peter Cox Cups.
