AFL: Collingwood has been dealt a major blow ahead of its season opener against the Western Bulldogs on Friday night with Jamie Elliott, Jordan De Goey and Levi Greenwood all ruled out.

Elliott has failed to recover from an ankle injury sustained at training last month, while De Goey will miss the Round 1 clash after breaking his hand in an accident at home over the weekend.

De Goey will have surgery to repair the break and will miss 2-3 weeks.

The young midfielder was previously battling a thigh injury that threatened to keep him out of the season opener but proved his fitness from that ailment at training last week.

Greenwood is facing longer on the sidelines, expected to miss 4-5 weeks after undergoing hip surgery.

Like De Goey, Greenwood was battling a different issue, hamstring tightness, during the JLT Series.

"Jamie was pretty unlucky not to overcome that troublesome ankle in time but we expect him to be back in the selection mix shortly and we'll further assess Jordy and Levi following their procedures," Magpies football boss Geoff Walsh said.

"It's disappointing to have to rule out players leading into the season opener, however it opens the door for other players who have had strong pre-seasons to get a crack at the reigning premiers this Friday night."
