Trimaran trapped underneath Forgan Bridge

MACKAY Volunteer Marine Rescue has faced the brunt of increasingly wild weather this morning after a 10 metre trimaran became wedged underneath the Forgan Bridge.

VMR duty skipper Charles Linsley said the vessel lost its mooring around 9.45am before drifting downstream and smashing into the bridge.

"The top half was pretty bent - there was some damage to the super structure of the vessel," Mr Linsley said.

"We had to clear it from under the bridge with our vessel.

"It probably took half an hour then we had to re-anchor it further up the river."

Mr Linsley said water police had initially contacted VMR with fears someone was on board the trimaran, however this later proved to be incorrect.

VMR has re-anchored the boat further downstream on the Pioneer River, and the search is underway to find the owner.
