Carly-Mae's tribute

GYMPIE sculptor Dan Davie is accustomed to working with the varied qualities of his materials, mostly steel and more recently marble.

But this morning he is facing a new adversary, time.

The Chatsworth horseman and artist has to deliver his latest work, carved from a new material again, carveable epoxy.

Mr Davie has to get his latest work to Rockhampton's Callaghan Park race track this morning, so it can be in place for the mid-afternoon event dedicated to the late Rockhampton jockey, Carly-Mae Pye.

Ms Pye suffered critical head and chest injuries in a riding accident on October 13 last year.

An award winning blacksmith whose steel sculptures have won international prizes, Mr Davie shifted to working in marble for the bust of Gympie jockey Desiree Gill, at Gympie racecourse.

"I finished it yesterday," he said of the sculpting of his Rockhampton commission.

"I'm not a painter, so I had to find someone to paint the surface in her colours.

"I rang the Gympie Gallery and they put me on to Julie," he said.

Julie Bambling was yesterday applying the finishing touches to the sculpture.

"It has to be done today," Mr Davie said.

"No pressure though," Julie Bambling said with a wry laugh.

"It'll be about a five-hour trip," Mr Davie said of today's drive. "I'll be leaving early."

Mr Davie is no stranger to racing and its dangers.

"I used to load the barriers in Mackay and see all the injuries, just in the barriers," he said.

So, as we enjoy a morning tea or coffee, spare a thought for Mr Davie, somewhere between here and Rockhampton.
