Volleyball rounds begin in earnest

GYMPIE Volleyball trial matches for the Open competition came to a close last week and the official premiership season commences tonight.

A total of 18 teams round out the competition, including nine new teams.

Gympie Volleyball spokesperson Rod Tebbutt said a number of teams had merged for the new season.

“A few (of the 18 teams) have been formed through the amalgamation of existing teams, but there are five teams entering the competition for the first time,” he said.

“With four new teams in B Grade and C Grade, it will be interesting to watch the season unfold.”

The Women's competition commences at 6pm next Tuesday, February 23 at the Gympie State High School gym.

A couple of teams still have room to take a new player or two.

New female players are most welcome.

If interested, drop into the Gympie High gymnasium at 6pm next Tuesday or contact Gympie Volleyball.

Training is held every Tuesday from 7pm (after the women's matches) at the gym, with coaching for players of all skill levels. Cost is $4.

The association's annual general meeting was held last Thursday with the newly elected committee comprised of president Tony Mills, secretary Rod Tebbutt, treasurer Colleen Gosden, vice-president Leisa Harch, game's coordinator Deanne Biddle, women's game coordinator Debbie Tebbutt and referee's coordinator Tom Lloyd.
