WELL behaved and expertly groomed dogs led the way at the Gympie Show yesterday the hotly contested show dog competition.

Helping Gympie shine in the event were local competitors Kerry Maguire and Ruth Waxman. Both ladies toasted a successful day.

Ms Maguire entered her Supreme Champion Maceltic Clan Griffyndor, nearly six years-of-age, into the State Bred Dog Class of the West Highland White Terrier category.

Her winning streak was shared by Ms Waxman whose Maceltic Rowan of the Myst Highland White Terrier was named outstanding in the Class 2 Minor Puppy Dog.

Ms Waxman has been showing dogs for more than 20 years while Ms Maguire has eight years of experience under her belt. Both are active members of the Gympie Kennel Club and are involved in dog obedience.

"I used to watch the dog shows and then decided to get involved," Ms Maguire said.

"It's nice to have a winning dog and to have been through the whole process and experienced that."

Ms Waxman said dog shows were also about friendship and meeting new people.

"They are a lot of fun and you meet so many new people," she said. "Often you spend the weekend away and camp overnight."

Anyone wanting to get involved in dog shows can contact Kerry Maguire on 5482 8874 for assistance. Ms Maguire said she was willing to help newcomers with all their questions.
