Thousands of new jobs to be created in health industry
IF YOU'RE looking to gain a qualification in an industry desperate for workers then the University of the Sunshine Coast recommends you study something health related.
A panel of four experts in health at the university discussed how the industry is evolving and is experiencing shortages in workers that need to be filled.
One expert on the panel, lecturer in psychology Dr Rachael Sharman, said the demand for health industry staff on the Sunshine Coast was mostly due to the roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
"The National Disability Insurance Scheme will mean there will be a lift in employment needs on the Sunshine Coast in disciplines such as psychology, nursing and even prosthetists," she said.
"The university being responsive to this is hoping to educate the public on how they can get degrees and qualifications that relate to the NDIS.
"We'll be facing some shortages in the next couple of years and now is the time to get involved if you have an interest in a particular area of health."
Dr Sharman said while a degree in psychology wasn't usually a highly demanded course, she said it was definitely a valuable sector to get qualified in.
"I worked in psychology related fields for 15 years before becoming an academic - from child protection to juvenile disability and other sorts as well," she said.
"There is in fact a lot of really good jobs related to mental health that don't require a full six years of study and we can discuss different opportunities for those interested."
Dr Sharman said the best thing those interested in taking advantage of health jobs boom could do was find out what job they'd love to do.
"I advise people to jump on Seek and have a look at the kind of jobs that are going around and the qualifications and background that they're looking for," she said.
"I think the best place to start is figuring out where you want to end up and in what job and then look at the qualifications."
She said those seeking more info could contact USC directly or check out the website.
