Accused home security system thief tossed thongs at police

POLICE allege one of their own was assaulted by a thief when the brazen 30-year-old male threw a pair of thongs at the officer while on the run on Sunday.

The man was allegedly seen stealing a home surveillance system Bunnings in Ferry St at Maryborough at 4pm.

Acting Sergeant Matt Walker of the Hervey Bay police said when the man left the store a couple of people gave chase, following the offender until he jumped the train lines at Station Square.

"He jumped down from the edge and has injured his ankle," Acting Sgt Walker said.

Police arrived at the scene soon after.

"He then assaulted a police officer by throwing a pair of thongs at them," Acting Sgt Walker said.

The man was treated by Queensland Ambulance Service and later taken to hospital for his ankle injury.

Acting Sgt Walker said the stolen property had been recovered and coded as evidence at Maryborough police station.

"The Maryborough 30 year old was charged with stealing, obstructing an officer and assaulting police," he said.

He will face Maryborough Magistrates Court on December 17.
