Calls for third bridge

GYMPIE residents are calling on authorities to fast track a third river crossing over the Mary River after minor flooding closed Kidd Bridge and caused traffic chaos Wednesday night.

Workers travelling home from inner-Gympie to the Southside waited for up to an hour to get across the river after finishing work.

One driver said she was caught in a line of traffic that stretched from Normanby Bridge up Mount Pleasant Road to the Phoenix Hotel.

Drivers said traffic controllers were giving preference to motorists entering from the Bruce Highway to keep the main road clear.

Drivers breathed a sigh relief this morning after water subsided and allowed traffic over Kidd Bridge but with a wet year forecast motorists can expect more hold ups in the future.
