80-year-old Imbil Empire removed from heritage list

THE old Empire Theatre in Yabba Rd, Imbil, has been excluded from a Gympie Regional Council heritage places list.

The removal from the register goes back to 2004, when the then council asked property owners if they wished to voluntarily have their respective properties listed as a Local Heritage Place, which would subsequently be recognised in the planning scheme.

A total of 453 submissions were received from property owners, including 112 Yabba Rd, Imbil, requesting their properties not be included on the Identified Heritage and Character Places schedule.

It meant all those properties would therefore, not be the subject of any heritage and character area provisions.

The council removed 452 properties, but the Empire was missed, due to an administration oversight.

Therefore when the Gympie Regional Council Planning Scheme was adopted in 2013, the Empire Theatre was listed as a Local Heritage Place.

The owners bought it to the council's attention, and the building, which was built in 1936 and closed in 1970, was again placed on the council's meeting agenda, for removal from the list.

At last week's Gympie Regional Council meeting, it was moved to amend the Gympie Regional Council Planning Scheme to remove the building from the schedule.

The motion was passed unanimously.
