Dumped pets spark anger at Maryborough Animal Refuge

THE manager of the Maryborough Animal Refuge says local pet owners need to "man-up and do the right thing" instead of dumping their unwanted animals outside the gate of the facility at night.

Blair Harris is furious and heartbroken after finding a styrofoam box containing two kittens on the side of the road outside the refuge on Wednesday morning.

"It had a plastic bag over the top with a sign on it saying 'Please give to a good home'," she said.

"There were pools of water on the plastic so they must have been left there before the storm on Tuesday night."

Ms Harris said after finding the box, staff immediately did a search of the cemetery grounds next door where they located a third sodden kitten in the grass.

"We're really hoping there were only three in the box," she said.

She said she could not understand why people continued to dump their animals outside the refuge instead of simply surrendering them to staff during opening hours.

"Man up - we are here to help," she said.

"People in that situation wouldn't have been refused.

"That these kittens were dumped is bad enough, but the fact that these people still didn't have the heart to come back for them during that storm is just heartbreaking.

"The poor kittens must have been terrified - it was a terrible storm."

The three domestic short-haired kittens are five to six weeks old and one has already been adopted.

Anyone interested in adopting either of the remaining kittens can phone the Maryborough refuge on 4123 1712.
