The face of neglect

WHILE Gympie Region's figures for animal cruelty complaints are relatively low when compared to the Sunshine Coast, most of the reports are prosecuted.

Julia Steley, an inspector with the RSPCA for the past six years, said the prevalence of cruelty in Gympie was no more or less than neighbouring regions.

For the 2010/11 financial year there were 181 cruelty complaints made to the RSPCA from the Gympie Region.

Most people The Gympie Times asked yesterday were shocked at the figures, saying one complaint was too many.

The Sunshine Coast reported close to 700 complaints last financial year. There were 382 reports in the Maryborough, Hervey Bay and surrounding regions.

Ms Steley said Gympie's 181 complaints was not a huge amount.

"But I must say most of my prosecutions come from Gympie.

"The cases reported in the Gympie Region are very serious. Not to say the others aren't.

"There's certainly some horrid cases here and everywhere else."

One of the worst she remembers from the Gympie Region was a white donkey that had severe cancer on its face, neck and back with skin blistering.

She has since been put into foster care and Ms Steley said she is doing well.
