ACTOR Ricky Whittle can't wait to tick Australia off his travel bucket list.

The American Gods and The 100 star is in the country this weekend for the Supanova Pop Culture Expo.

"I really want to socialise and get to know what Australia is all about. I've never met an Australian I didn't get along with,” he tells APN.

"I did Dancing With The Stars with Natalie Lowe, I'm great friends with Bob Morely and Eliza Taylor from The 100, and now I'm working with the wonderful Emily Browning (on American Gods). It feel like I'm surrounded by you guys in my working life.”

Whittle is no stranger to pop culture expos thanks to his role on popular sci-fi drama The 100, now in its fourth season.

"Sci-fi is a completely different genre to anything else, except maybe with horror, in that you get a bit of a cult following,” he says.

"They're so passionate about the shows they watch that they end up following you everywhere no matter what you do.

"I never would have dreamt of having that kind of support. People on the opposite side of the world knowing my name or wanting to meet me is an honour.”

American Gods is Whittle's biggest role to date. Currently filming in Toronto, the fantasy series is one of the most highly anticipated TV shows of next year.

He plays an ex-convict named Shadow, who meets a mysterious man called Mr Wednesday (Ian McShane).

"We've got possibly the most incredible ensemble cast I've ever seen created,” he says.

"I grew up watching Ian McShane with my mother as Lovejoy in the UK. Lots more fans will know him from Deadwood.

"I don't think he even knows how many projects he's done. He's probably forgotten more work than I'm ever going to do.”

Shadow soon learns Mr Wednesday is actually the god Odin of Norse mythology and that there is a war between the old gods, who have incorporated themselves into American life and pretend to be ordinary people, and the new gods of media and technology.

"Shadow is hired by Mr Wednesday to be his personal bodyguard and driver,” Whittle says.

"The majority of the show is going to follow their journey and his quest to create an army of gods to wage war against the new rising gods; Shadow's stuck in the middle.”

The Supanova Pop Culture Expo runs from November 11 to 13 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
