That sinking feeling surfaces

AS THE temperature rises and summer beckons, my mind has turned to relaxing days spent on the water.

This week my blog posts have had a nautical theme and, as I researched all things marine-based, I was excited to come across a DIY boat-building kit. This surely could be the ultimate family summer holiday project for a seeker of the lost arts?

We shall build our own boat and launch it into the sparkling river and while away the day floating downstream marvelling at our brilliant craft skills. I can see it now; the kids and me hammering away and creating our own piece of history in the tradition of the great shipwrights… We would be a part of the renaissance of heirloom-quality craftsmanship in a disposable world.

Off I go to chill the champagne to crack over the hull upon launch. And then reality hits. Or I should say, reality crunches my finger to the bone as I put away laundry in that other great DIY-building exercise we undertook: the Ikea flat-pack chest of drawers.

As testament to our flat-pack DIY building skills, the drawers do not bode well. They have been crafted in the tradition of the maestro of DIY builders, Homer Simpson and his famous spice rack.

It's not that I'm not willing to give it a go. The boat-kit website tells me, "if I can use a hammer, I can build a boat" and I can use a hammer, so what is stopping me?

The only real problem I can see with building my own boat is that it may sink. Apart from that small detail, I'm loving the idea.

Now, where did I put that champagne? That sounds like a refreshing and entirely achievable way to cool down.
